ABOUT

Born in Eastbourne, England, in 1973, Christian Burnham is a British contemporary artist based in Hasselt, Belgium. His interdisciplinary practice combines stencil art with symbolic realism, exploring themes of addiction, recovery, resilience, spirituality, and personal transformation through painting, installation, and mixed media.

Early Life

Burnham’s early life was shaped by a multicultural upbringing. The son of an English father and a Finnish mother, he spent his childhood living in South Africa, Sweden, and Belgium. Exposure to different cultures and perspectives, together with becoming fluent in four languages by the age of twenty, fostered an openness and curiosity that continues to influence his artistic practice.

A Journey Through Motocross

Before dedicating himself to art, Burnham enjoyed a fifteen-year career as a professional motocross rider. After moving to Belgium in 1991, he competed internationally for British, Italian, and German teams, winning the German National Championship on multiple occasions and achieving numerous top-five finishes in the FIM Motocross World Championship. The discipline, resilience, and international outlook developed during this period remain integral to his creative approach.

Transformation

Retirement from professional sport brought an unexpected loss of identity and purpose, leading to a prolonged struggle with alcohol addiction. During recovery, Burnham rediscovered a passion for art that had first emerged in his teenage years. What began as a personal means of healing gradually evolved into a full-time artistic practice centred on transformation, renewal, and the human capacity for change.

Artistic Practice

Entirely self-taught, Burnham has developed a distinctive visual language that merges the immediacy of street art with the refinement of contemporary fine art. Working with spray paint, acrylics, inks, layered stencils, epoxy resin, Corten steel, and sculptural elements, he creates richly textured works that combine technical precision with emotional depth. Symbolism plays a central role throughout his practice, with recurring motifs exploring the tension between destruction and redemption, vulnerability and strength.

International Recognition

In 2025, Burnham’s work was exhibited internationally at the XV Florence Contemporary Biennale and Spectrum Miami, where he received the Best New Exhibitor Award, marking an important milestone in his growing international career. In 2026, he further expanded his international presence, exhibiting at ArtExpo New York, where he was awarded the Artist Spotlight Award, recognising his emerging impact within the contemporary art scene.

Artistic vision

Christian Burnham's work explores transformation as a fundamental condition of human existence. Through symbolism, material experimentation and layered visual narratives, he investigates how adversity, impermanence and renewal shape both individual identity and our shared human experience. Each new body of work builds upon this ongoing exploration, inviting viewers to reflect not only on where they have been, but on who they are becoming.
